It is said that William Carlos William was the first one who invented the free verse. He used the line break as his instrument to move on with the American free verse. Free Verse is about those poems which are written not following any particular meter or rhyme scheme. The lengths and words of such poems vary from one to another. One poem which is of immense importance when talking about free verse is William Carlos William’s “The Red Wheelbarrow.” The lines read “so much depends / upon / a red wheel / barrow / glazed with rain / water / beside the white / chickens” (Williams, 1981).
